Unregistered trailer inspections
Trailers must pass an unregistered vehicle inspection prior to the establishment of registration.
Trailer inspections
Unregistered vehicle inspections can be conducted as follows:
Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS), AUVIS examiners may inspect:
- all low-ATM trailers up to and including 4500kg ATM, except for
- low-ATM trailers fitted with air or vacuum braking systems.
Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme (HVAIS), HVAIS examiners may inspect:
- all low-ATM trailers between 2001-4500kg ATM, or
- any low-ATM trailers fitted with an air or vacuum braking system.
- all high-ATM trailers (over 4500kg ATM) except for
- special purpose trailers (SPV)* which exceed mass or dimension limits.
*For the inspection of SPV trailers, see VSI 46.
- special purpose trailers (SPV)* which exceed mass or dimension limits.
The unregistered vehicle inspection verifies that the unregistered trailer is safe, and it meets design and identity standards. Examiners will provide an unregistered vehicle inspection report upon completion of the inspection.
If a trailer was manufactured under the Road Vehicle Standards Act legislation (RVSA) and its VIN is not found on the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) it will fail the inspection.
Establishing registration
Once you have your unregistered vehicle inspection report, you can attend your nearest Service NSW centre to establish registration for your homemade trailer.
