Smart Sign Trial at Bellambi Boat Ramp
Transport for NSW is currently trialing a new Maritime Smart Sign at Bellambi Boat Ramp which we expect will provide a new direction in safety messaging for the boating public.
On top of the regular Maritime signage, a Variable Message Sign (VMS) which automatically activates in strong wind warnings. The sign will be automated to display a white VMS message, when warnings are issued. This will potentially make boaters think about whether it is safe to go out when conditions are unfavourable.
Several types of environmentally-friendly E-Ink panels are also being trialed in the middle panels of the sign. These panels require less power than typical LED signage and use no power when the panels are displayed. This allows the whole system to run off solar power and makes the sign feasible in a variety of situations statewide, where no power is available. Information can be centrally changed at regular intervals and will be used for weather updates, safety messaging, upcoming events etc
Information Monitoring
In addition, a camera is positioned on top of the sign for use by local Maritime Boating Operations staff is currently being trialed. It will be able to access a “live feed” of the Boat Ramp to help monitor the weather conditions and in the deployment of staff and resources. The camera can rotate to allow views of the sea state and the boat ramp.
