Getting your rider licence

The learner rider licence is the first step in the Motorcycle Graduated Licensing Scheme (MGLS), which qualifies you to ride a motorbike, motor scooter, trike or three-wheeled scooter on NSW roads.

To get your learner licence, you need to:

• be at least 16 years and 9 months of age
• complete the pre-learner course if you live in a declared area, where rider training is available
• pass the rider knowledge test.

You don't need to have a car driver licence to apply for a rider licence. 

To get your provisional P1 licence, you need to:

• be at least 17 years of age
• have held your learner rider licence for 3 months or more
• complete the pre-provisional course, including the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test, if you live in a declared area; or
• pass the riding test at a service centre if you live in an undeclared area, where rider training courses aren't available.

Once you've had your provisional P1 licence for at least 12 months, you can apply for a provisional P2 rider licence.

If you’re 25 or older and hold a full (unrestricted) Australian driver licence, you can apply for a full rider licence without completing the provisional P2 licence stage.

If you've held your P2 rider licence for at least 2 years, you can apply for a full (unrestricted) rider licence.
