How to renew vehicle registration
Want to renew your vehicle registration? It’s easy. You can renew online or in person after you get CTP insurance and a safety inspection.
Step-by-step guide to renewal
Buy compulsory third party (CTP) insurance
All vehicles except trailers and caravans must have CTP insurance (also know as a green slip). CTP insurance covers death and personal injury when you or the person driving your vehicle is at fault in an accident. In some circumstances, CTP insurance covers you regardless of who was at fault. Vehicles registered in NSW must use a NSW CTP insurer.
Use the green slip calculator to compare CTP insurance quotes.
When you buy CTP insurance, most insurers send us confirmation electronically so you don't need to provide any paperwork when you register your vehicle.
The length of your CTP insurance policy must match your registration term. For example, a 6 month registration requires a 6 month CTP insurance policy.
If you choose to renew your registration for 6 months, you must renew your CTP insurance and registration within 21 days of the registration expiry date.
CTP insurance policies have a use-by-date and must be used before they expire.
Get a vehicle inspection
Most vehicles require an annual safety inspection (pink slip). Your registration renewal notice tells you if your vehicle needs an inspection. If you are changing terms, you must request a new renewal notice to see if the inspection requirements have changed.

What if you don't renew on time?
If you don't renew your rego by the due date your vehicle will be unregistered. Driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal. It carries heavy penalties, and can mean your vehicle is not covered by CTP insurance.
You can renew your registration up to 3 months before the due date and within 3 months after it has expired. Find out the rules on early and late renewal.
