Case study: Parramatta escarpment boardwalk
This project in the City of Parramatta created new infrastructure to help students get to school by walking or riding.
As Macarthur Girls High School students descend the newly built stairway leading to Parramatta River in droves, it’s clear their way to and from school has improved. Thanks to an $18 million active transport project co-funded by the NSW Government and City of Parramatta, students can travel with ease and a great view.
Completed in late 2023, the project included the construction of two stairways leading from Parramatta River to Stewart Street and Macarthur Street, and a shared off-road path connecting Parramatta Park to Melrose Park.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said, “This award-winning boardwalk is the final link in the popular Parramatta Valley Cycleway.
“This connection provides over 20 kilometres of off-road paths along the Parramatta River and now attracts more than two million pedestrians and cyclists enjoying the CBD foreshore every year.”
The project supports greater connections to sporting fields, playgrounds, the city centre and transport hubs – giving residents and students many reasons to hop on their bike or enjoy their journey by foot.
