How will streets be improved?

In 2024, Transport for NSW is investing $10 million to support the delivery of projects by NSW councils that make it safer and easier for kids to walk or ride in local neighbourhoods. This is in addition to the $50 million Get NSW Active yearly funding, which supports local councils to deliver walking and riding street improvements around schools.

In the FY2025/26 program, $10 million will be allocated to school projects through the Get NSW Active Program. Applications will open to NSW councils on 14 October 2024.

A share of $500,000 will go towards 10 successful councils to develop and deliver behavioural-change projects that encourage students to walk and ride to school. Councils will work with schools to deliver a lesson series that identify routes and active travel opportunities.

Get Kids Active funding recipients 2024

Wilmoringle Public School

Construction of a 2.4m wide, 1.38km footpath from Wilmoringle village to Wilmoringle Public School, with solar lighting at 65m intervals. This project aims to enhance community connectivity and safety for the predominantly Aboriginal community. (Brewarrina Shire Council)

Malek Fahd Islamic School

Waterloo Road is a regional road providing access to Malek Fahd Islamic School and Chullora Marketplace. It attracts high pedestrian and traffic movements, particularly during school peak periods. To improve safety of all pedestrians and students, a raised pedestrian crossing with kerb extensions is proposed on Waterloo Road. (Canterbury-Bankstown Council)

Goolgowi Public School

Goolgowi Public School is the only education facility in the town, with approximately 60 kids that attend daily. The proposed works include upgrading the current road crossing with a raised crossing and installing approximately 280m of footpath, connecting current footpaths to the new school crossing. (Carrathool Shire Council)

St Therese's Community Parish School

Enhancing safety and connectivity in Wilcannia, this project will upgrade lighting, paving, and road sealing along the Barrier Highway shared path to better connect the community. It improves nighttime visibility, fosters a safer and more walkable community. It also preserves local heritage through sustainable, active transport solutions. (Central Darling Shire Council)
