Sailing Event Notification System
Transport for NSW developed the Sailing Event Notification System to allow sailing events to proceed without needing an aquatic event licence.
Under the Sailing Event Notification System, event organisers can notify Transport for NSW about sailing events so they don't need an aquatic event licence.
To be exempt from an aquatic event licence, sailing events must comply with certain Exemptions and Conditions (PDF 753.23KB).
See Exemptions and Conditions (PDF 753.23KB) for area-specific conditions for:
- Coffs Harbour
- Eden
- Newcastle
- Port Kembla
- Sydney Harbour
- Yamba Harbour.
To see a full map of sailing activity areas view the Aquatic Activity Area Map.
Event notification
Event organisers must notify Transport at least 6 weeks before any sailing event.
This gives Transport and other waterway users notice of anticipated activity levels on NSW waterways.
Event organisers can notify Transport about a series of similar activities up to 12 months in advance. You need separate notification forms for events that are significantly different.
Complete and submit the Sailing Event Notification Form (PDF 811.94KB).
Note:Form must be downloaded and saved in order to submit it.
Exclusive use for sailing events
Exclusive use is required for events that create a higher risk of danger to the public than is normally expected on a waterway.
Examples of sailing events that may require exclusive use include where:
- a large number of participating vessels are attending the event, e.g. interclub races or state/national titles
- a large number of spectators are expected to attend the event, e.g. the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
- sailing vessels or support craft are travelling at high speeds, e.g. events such as Extreme Sailing
- vessels may be behaving erratically, e.g. for filming related activity.
All sailing events that require exclusive use of a NSW waterway will need an aquatic event licence. If you are unsure whether your event requires exclusive use, please contact Transport on 13 12 36. This should be done at least 6 weeks before the event.
