Operating a PWC

A personal watercraft (PWC) is a vessel with a fully enclosed hull that may be driven standing up, lying down, sitting astride or kneeling. They include jet skis, Sea-Doos and jet-powered surfboards.

PWC incidents are usually caused by poor judgement, no proper lookout and excessive speed.

The best ways to increase the safety of PWC riders, your passengers and others sharing the waterways are:

  • knowing the rules,
  • getting a PWC licence and
  • learning how to ride safely.

Whether you’re a new or experienced PWC operator, the following resources provide practical information on safely operating a PWC and following NSW boating rules.

Always apply care, courtesy and common sense when riding your PWC.

PWC safety and rules

If you plan to ride a PWC, follow these rules.

  • You and your passengers must always wear a lifejacket when riding, regardless of speed.
  • Keep to a safe speed for the conditions and follow the speed limit signs.
  • Always keep a safe distance clear of others. This includes the shore, structures, other craft and especially people in the water.
  • PWC use water-jet thrust to steer. Be aware that if the throttle is turned off suddenly, the control you have over the steering can be reduced.
  • Always make sure the bungs are in.
  • Check the weather before you head out, every time.
  • Tell someone where you're going and the time you expect to be back.
  • Find the PWC rules and requirements in the PWC Handbook.
