When we need to take your photo
Find out about when your photo needs to be taken for proof of identity and licence products.
If your photo isn't in our system
If you don't have an existing valid photo on our system, we need to take your photo when you apply for, renew, reissue or replace your:
- driver or rider licence
- combined driver and boat licence
- NSW Photo Card
- Mobility Parking Scheme permit
- firearms licence
- Security Industry licence
- Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents licence.
If you've already held a licence or photo card, an existing valid photo can be used if it passes the facial recognition check. The photo must not have been taken more than 10 years and 6 months before the expiry date of the newly renewed licence or photo card.
Who can use the photo
Your photo is protected by the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 and can only be used for a driver licence or photo card product.
If you have concerns about privacy, see the Service NSW privacy policy for how they use your personal details.
