Princes Highway and the south
The Princes Highway can experience congestion during holiday periods. Here's how to avoid holiday congestion.
Princes Highway holiday congestion
The Princes Highway from the Illawarra to the Sapphire Coast can experience significant congestion during long weekends, school holidays and other special events.
With 12 major Princes Highway upgrade projects either in construction or development, holiday congestion will continue to be a factor along the South Coast in the short term while these projects are delivered.

Congestion points on the Princes Highway
Bomaderry to South Nowra
With construction of the Nowra Bridge project, the Princes Highway between Bomaderry and South Nowra is expected to be a significant congestion point.
Traffic Management Road Crews will be deployed to the Princes Highway at Nowra to:
- respond to unplanned incidents
- manage traffic queues
- report real-time traffic delay information.
Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection
During holiday periods, there is congestion and delays experienced by westbound traffic on Jervis Bay Road attempting to access the Princes Highway northbound.
To lessen the adverse traffic impacts, the following initiatives will be implemented:
- a temporary speed limit reduction, advance warning signage, and portable Variable Message Sign (VMS) units on the Princes Highway southbound
- during periods of excessive queuing on Jervis Bay Road, portable traffic control signals with barrier boom (PTS-B) will be utilised to ‘hold’ southbound Princes Highway traffic, and prioritise westbound Jervis Bay Road traffic, allowing those motorists to enter the Highway.
Milton/Ulladulla
The pedestrian ‘zebra’ crossing on the Princes Highway at Milton has been replaced with traffic lights.
Pedestrian access in holiday periods will be managed by the traffic lights to control the light's frequency and duration.
This action will allow more through time for vehicles, minimising traffic delays and queue lengths on the Princes Highway.
Batemans Bay
On holiday weekends and public holidays there is often congestion and delays experienced by north and southbound traffic on the Princes Highway, and eastbound traffic on the Kings Highway, accessing the Princes Highway roundabout, north of Batemans Bay.
Traffic Management Road Crews will be deployed to the area to:
- respond to unplanned incidents
- manage traffic queues
- report real-time traffic delay information.
How to plan your journey and avoid holiday congestion
Live Traffic
Download the Live Traffic app and ‘create a trip’ before you leave. This is a great way to see any incidents you may encounter along your travel route.
Live Traffic also allows you to:
- view traffic cameras for certain locations
- view rest stop locations
- receive live feeds from Google maps.
Transport for NSW Rest area map
The Transport for NSW Rest area map makes planning your rest stops easy and provides details on the type of facilities available at each rest area.
Taking a break every two hours is recommended as part of any journey. The Princes Highway has many opportunities to take a break, whether it be in local towns or dedicated roadside rest areas.
