If you have a current overseas licence, it may count towards getting a NSW licence. Find which licence is equivalent to yours in NSW.
NSW equivalents for overseas driver and rider licences
In addition to having an overseas licence, you must be at least:
- 16 years for a NSW learner driver licence
- 16 years and 9 months for a NSW learner rider licence
- 17 years for a NSW provisional driver or rider licence.

Driver, current learner | Learner driver licence You may be eligible to take a Hazard Perception Test (HPT) and driving test to progress to a provisional licence without starting on a NSW learner licence. You may also need to pass a knowledge test. |

Driver, held for more than 12 months but less than 3 years | Provisional P2 driver licence You may need to pass a knowledge test and driving test. |
Driver, held for more than 3 years | Unrestricted driver licence You may need to pass a knowledge test and driving test. |
Rider, current learner | Learner rider licence You are exempt from attending the pre-learner rider training course to be issued a NSW learner rider licence. |
Rider, held for less than 12 months | Provisional P1 rider licence You may need to pass a rider knowledge test and successfully complete the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (if you live in a declared area) or a rider test (if you live outside a declared area). |
Rider, held for more than 12 months but less than 3 years if you are under 25 years | Provisional P2 rider licence You may need to pass a rider knowledge test and successfully complete the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (if you live in a declared area) or a rider test (if you live outside a declared area). |
Rider, held for more than 12 months but less than 3 years and you are 25 or older with a current Australian unrestricted driver licence | Unrestricted rider licence You are exempt from the P2 rider licence stage. |
Rider, held for more than 3 years | Unrestricted rider licence You may need to pass a rider knowledge test and successfully complete the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (if you live in a declared area) or a rider test (if you live outside a declared area). |
