Type approved trailers
Commonwealth compliance approval
Under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA), if you are building more than four low-ATM trailers (4.5 tonnes ATM or less) in a 12-month period you must seek compliance approval and entry to the RAV via a Vehicle Type Approval (VTA).
Visit low ATM trailers on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) website for more information about obtaining a low-ATM VTA.
Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN)
From 1 July 2023, Transport for NSW (Transport) will no longer allocate VINs to trailer manufacturers.
Trailer manufacturers and importers should contact the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS) for information on obtaining VINs for type approved trailers. All trailers must have a compliant vehicle plate with a VIN listed on both the plate and the RAV prior to registration in NSW.
Trailer Data Sheets
Trailer data sheets (also known as trailer certifications) were previously used by Transport to help trailer manufacturers meet compliance requirements.
Transport has identified that trailer manufacturers are required to meet more stringent requirements under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA). These new requirements have superseded the purpose of trailer data sheets.
To help reduce the regulatory burden on trailer manufacturers Transport is ceasing the use and creation of trailer data sheets.
Trailer data sheets are no longer used as of 5 April 2024
