Trailers built prior to 1989
Pre-1989 trailer ID
Trailers manufactured prior to 1 January 1989, and with no pre-existing identifiers such as a chassis number may be eligible for a trailer identification number. Sufficient proof of origin must be provided.
Trailer inspection and certification
Trailers must pass an unregistered vehicle inspection.
For more information about inspections for unregistered trailers, see Unregistered Trailer Inspections.
If the trailer was manufactured prior to 1 January 1989 and has no pre-existing identifiers, you will need to provide the following when you attend the unregistered vehicle inspection:
- a weighbridge ticket confirming the tare of the trailer
- clear photos of all four sides of the trailer and draw bar, and
- proof of origin confirming the make/model of the trailer and the year of manufacture (i.e. proof the vehicle was constructed prior to 1989).
Acceptable evidence to confirm proof of origin may include any of the following that clearly state the make/model of the trailer and the date of manufacture:
- paper Certificate of Registration, renewal notice or other jurisdiction’s registration document
- motor dealer's notice of sale
- bill of sale, receipt or tax invoice
- Notice of Disposal (NOD)
- a legal will or probate, written advice from the Executor, Letters of Administration
- written advice from a solicitor or letter from the NSW Trustee and Guardian (previously 'public trustee')
- motor vehicle sale contracts.
The Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) examiner will submit the ID request application on your behalf. If the application is not complete (i.e. if proof of origin is not provided) the application will be denied.
Transport for NSW (Transport) will assess the application and if approved, Transport will issue an ID number. You must stamp the new identification number onto the trailer drawbar.
Establishing registration
Once you have your AUVIS/HVAIS inspection report, you can attend your nearest Service NSW service centre to establish registration for your trailer. For information on how to apply for registration visit Service NSW.
