Virtual allied health innovation
Western NSW is a leader in the delivery of virtual care (telehealth), so people can receive the highest quality care close to home. In partnership with the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation we piloted the delivery of virtual allied health care and now offer ongoing virtual care in the professions of:

- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Pathology
- Pharmacy
- Physiotherapy

Leading the way in virtual care
Brett Chambers and the pharmacy team have pioneered the Western NSW LHD's Virtual Clinical Pharmacy Service in NSW, helping patients, doctors and nursing staff to safely use medications at their hospital when a pharmacist is not on-site.
Financial incentives
Several Allied Health positions qualify for an incentives package, including up to $10,000- $20,000 recruitment/ relocation incentives and $5,000- $10,000 retention incentives.

Allied Health Early Accelerated Development (AHEAD) Program
The Allied Health Early Accelerated Development (AHEAD) Program provides early-career clinicians with a unique opportunity to accelerate their career in Western NSW LHD, where allied health professionals are valued and can excel.
Exclusive to Western NSW Local Health District, the AHEAD Program is a two-year structured and supportive program where early-career allied health professionals:
- Experience a positive transition to professional practice in the District, with access to workplace learning, supervision and mentoring, and supported clinical and professional development
- Collaborate and work within dynamic, highly professional multidisciplinary teams
- Develop professional skills in key areas including early leadership and continuous quality improvement at interdisciplinary education days
- Join a supportive network of early-career allied health clinicians
- Undertake a quality improvement project in the second year of the program
- Receive support for career development both within and beyond the program

Western NSW Local Health District was the recipient of the 2024 NSW Health Award’s Secretary’s Award for “Learners to Leaders: Allied Health Rural Graduate Program”.

From 2025, the AHEAD Program will support learners to leaders and will be available to all early-career allied health professionals at Western NSW LHD.
Who should apply?
The AHEAD Program is open to early-career allied health professionals (newly graduating or with previous experience) commencing or currently employed in the District as:
- a Level 1 allied health professional (NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award), or
- an early-career allied health professional (other relevant awards, e.g. Pharmacy, Psychology, Medical Radiation Scientists (State) Awards); program participation will be discussed during recruitment and onboarding
Our multidisciplinary program includes graduates and early-career clinicians from dietetics, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology, radiation therapy, social work, speech pathology, and more!
The AHEAD program is for enthusiastic and passionate clinicians who are motivated to:

Start date
The AHEAD program runs throughout the calendar year.
New employees can join the AHEAD program upon commencement of their role and participate in the program for up to two years of employment in Western NSW LHD as an early-career allied health professional.
Program structure
The AHEAD Program is a two-year supportive education program for early-career allied health professionals.
Receive support as you transition to your new role and throughout your first two years in Western NSW LHD. Access clinical supervision, mentoring, and additional peer and program supports.
Be part of a multidisciplinary network of like-minded allied health professionals across the District and create social and professional connections that will carry throughout your career. Meet and share learning and experiences with colleagues across sites and teams.
Receive regular clinical supervision and have access to additional supports, such as mentoring and the AHEAD Program Coordinator.
Engage in professional skill development via AHEAD’s interdisciplinary education workshops to build capability in a broad range of areas relevant to your allied health career, including leadership, improvement science and multidisciplinary clinical practice.
Education days are facilitated by experts in their fields and include topics designed for career success, such as leadership, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary practice. AHEAD education workshops are additional to role and discipline-specific professional development opportunities via workshops, in-services, and District days.
Undertake a quality improvement in Year 2 of the AHEAD Program. Participants receive ongoing support and education throughout the quality improvement process to facilitate success.
The AHEAD program facilitates career development and opportunities for progression both within and beyond the program. Learn about allied health career pathways, hear from allied health professionals who are excelling in their respective fields, and receive individual coaching and mentoring.
