Gulargambone - a great place to live
Gulargambone (or 'Gular' as it known to the locals) is fast becoming a cultural hot spot, thanks to innovative locals transforming their town with quirky and colourful art projects. Most years the Gulargambone Community Enterprises Co-op runs the Pave The Way To Gular Festival with a different theme each year.
So far the festival has produced 15 street murals; five sculptural window installations within closed shops along Bourbah Street; the water tower 3D mural of the Sacred Kingfisher (subject of an Australian stamp) and the “Ghosts of Bullocks” sculpture. The riverwalk has been transformed into a sculpture trail - there is lots to see in this progressive little town.
Gulargambone means ‘watering hole for many Galahs’ in the local Aboriginal language, and it is well known for its corrugated tin Galahs, created by local artists which act as welcoming signposts into town.
Gular is home to a pharmacy, grocery store, bowling club, hotel, real estate, rural supplies, and a rural transaction centre (post office and banking). Gulargambone Central School caters for Kindergarten to Year 12, a brand new pre-school and family day care.
Café 2828, a vibrant café, was originally created by community volunteers to help stimulate the town’s economy, and is now a café, gallery, craft and produce, function centre, second-hand book shop and provides plenty of information for visitors.
