Walgett - a great place to live
Walgett is an Aboriginal word for the “Meeting place of two rivers” situated by the Namoi River near its junction with the Barwon River in the northwest of NSW. Walgett is an agricultural town and is part of the third largest shire in NSW. The Walgett Shire (local government area) has an area of 22,300 square kilometres and is home to 6,100 people.
The community in Walgett is welcoming and the hospital staff are well respected. The median age in Walgett is 44 years, with 21% of the population identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander in the 2021 census.
Historically, Walgett once served as the port for paddle steamers on the Murray-Darling river systems. Traditionally a regional hub for wool, wheat and cotton, Walgett is the gateway to the NSW opal fields at Lightning Ridge to the north and The Grawin to the west. The main source of income in the district is from farming wool, beef, lamb, cotton and a variety of grains.
The Walgett shire is rich in Aboriginal heritage. The Aboriginal people of Walgett are mostly from Gamilaraay, Yuwaalaraay and Ngayimbaanations. The Dharriwaa Elders Group Exhibition centre offers fascinating exhibits of indigenous artefacts and a self-guided walking track. Follow the picturesque Tracker Walford Walkway, which winds along the Namoi River for 1.5km in memory of legendary local Aboriginal tracker, Norman Walford.
Climate
Walgett has a hot, semi arid climate with hot to very hot summers and mild to cool winters with occasional frosts. Summer temperatures frequently rise above 40° Celsius.
