Goodooga - a great area to live
Goodooga is a very small, remote town at the very top of NSW, on the eastern bank of the Bokhara River. It’s near to Brewarrina and Lightning Ridge and just 20kms south of the Queensland border.
With a population of 247 people, most residents live on the land around Goodooga and not in the town itself. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people make up approximately 74% of the population.
Goodooga is a part of the Brewarrina Shire Council which covers an area of 19,000 square kilometres and borders the state line of Queensland. The Shire has many attractions like the Old Barwon Bridge, Culgoa National Park, Narran Lakes, Cobb & Co trails, Four Mile Skiing Reserve, Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Visitor Information & Exhibition Centre, Darling River Run, Ochre Bed Pits, and the State Heritage Aboriginal Mission.
Many significant events occur in the Shire including Brewarrina Races, Barwon River Rodeo, Agricultural Field Day, NAIDOC celebration, Weilmoringle Cancel Council Tennis Day, Goodooga Wool Day, Bre Big Fish competition and the Bald Archy Art Prize.
A must visit is the Goodooga Great Artesian Bore Baths, a heated water pool. The springs pull their water from the Great Artesian Basin - the world's largest and deepest artesian basin, it covers more than 1.7 million square kilometres of Australia.
Fed by mineral-rich waters from the Great Artesian Basin, the Goodooga Bore Baths brings a complete oasis to the Australian Outback. A complex that opened just a few years ago on the edge of a small town, the springs are well known for their accessible and family-friendly facilities. Highly sought after to cure ailments such as pain relief, stress reduction, improve blood circulation, promote sleep, and heal skin, the baths are a popular place day and night.
Climate
Goodooga's climate is hot and semi-arid with little rainfall throughout the year, with a high number of clear days. Summer days are very hot with top temperatures averaging 35 degrees C and winter average temperatures at 18 degrees C.
Community
The community of Goodooga is very small and unique and the locals are very friendly. Goodooga is a community where its rich Aboriginal history remains culturally strong.
The Aboriginal reserve 'Tin Camp' once held 52 homes and there are two Aboriginal cemeteries on the outside boundaries of the Goodooga reserve. The traditional owners and other Aboriginal family groups have maintained their cultural connection to Goodooga Tin Camp and cemeteries and have both historic and contemporary values that are preserved in oral histories. The area was once a hideout of legendary bushranger Captain Thunderbolt.
The Goodooga–Lightning Ridge branch of the Country Women’s Association is a powerful and hard-working group that has been active in the region for almost a century and bring the community together through events, the annual Goodooga Wool Day being a highlight of the year.
The main sport in Goodooga is rugby league with netball, bowls and basketball also popular.
