Rural nursing in Western NSW
Our rural based multipurpose sites are small hospitals and some also contain residential aged care.
Rural nurses work across settings in emergency, acute care, aged care, chronic disease, child health, primary care, mental health, dialysis, palliative, and health promotion.
The nurses will usually work in small teams or on their own but they are supported at all times by a world leading virtual care model, using the latest telehealth technology. The virtual services provides complete wrap around support for our nurses, ensuring they always have access to consultant level advice and never feel on their own.
Rural nursing is often nurse-led care, meaning nurses are a key part of the decision-making for patient care and have more influence on health care delivery.
Rural nurses may experience far greater autonomy than nurses working in larger hospitals. They will generally respond to a broader range of emergency and health needs, whilst also being encouraged and supported to develop skills to work the top of their scope of practice.
Rural nursing can be extremely rewarding. Rural nurses often build personal connections with patients, as they may be responsible for their care from admission to discharge and sometimes even in a home based setting. Rural nurses are respected and valued members of their home towns.
