Entry-level opportunities
The Premier's Department offers entry-level programs and pathway opportunities to help people start a career with the department. This includes programs such as CareerTrackers, which offers 12-week internships to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students, and the NSW Government Graduate Program, which involves placements in different roles across NSW Government over 18 months.
Networking opportunities
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees are strongly encouraged to be involved in available networks and groups.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff advisory committee
This committee works closely with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Staff Advisory Group members and provides advice to the Premier's Department Senior Executive Board on Aboriginal related workforce initiatives and programs.
The Reconciliation Action Plan working group
This working group comprises employees from across the department, who have come together to lead the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan. The work is guided by Reconciliation Australia, the peak national organisation building and promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians for the wellbeing of the nation.
Aboriginal identified and targeted roles
At the Premier's Department we actively encourage Aboriginal people to apply for all roles. We also support employment opportunities through the use of identified and targeted roles.
Identified roles
Aboriginal identified roles work directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and are involved in the development or delivery of services and programs that have an impact on Aboriginal people or involve dealing with Aboriginal communities.
Unlike targeted roles, only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply for identified roles as Aboriginality is considered an essential requirement of the role.
Targeted roles
Aboriginal targeted roles do not necessarily have a direct role working with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people nor work specifically on First Nations issues. However, roles are sometimes targeted to improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal people, in line with departmental objectives.
