Our models of care
The care options will depend on your pregnancy and health needs and which community you are in. It is recommended you see your local midwife prior to 14 weeks of pregnancy to talk about the best model of care for you.
Western NSW LHD offers the following care services:
This service is for all women who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or for women who are having a baby that may identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
We aim to provide culturally safe care that respects your needs and choices at all stages of pregnancy and birth.
You can get to know your midwife and Aboriginal health worker during your pregnancy, and we will provide you with care until your baby reaches 8 weeks old.
Your GP or emergency staff will refer you to this service for management of complications in the early stages of pregnancy, usually before 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Any woman with identified risks during their pregnancy will be referred to a high risk clinic in the District to determine management plans for their pregnancy.
This Maternity Antenatal/Postnatal Program (MAPP) provides you with a known midwife during antenatal (before birth) and postnatally (after birth) of your baby at home. The MAPP midwife does not care for you during your labour and birth. Birth care will be through your birthing hospital using the hospital-based midwives and doctors.
MAPP is for all women under public care within the health service area with all pregnancy risk levels. Women are referred to have shared care with a MAPP midwife and a doctor (GP or obstetrician). Your care will be based on you and your baby's care needs and choices.
MAPP is available across many sites with the Western NSW LHD, including outreach services.
Midwife and doctor clinics are staffed by our team of hospital-based doctors and midwives. These staff members will provide antenatal (before birth) care throughout your pregnancy, and you may also be cared for them during birth and in the postnatal (after birth) clinic.
Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) provides you with a known midwife who cares for you during your pregnancy, your birth and postnatal (after birth) time.
Currently in Western NSW, MGP is for women with a low-risk pregnancy and the midwives will provide most of your care. Midwives are trained specialists in normal pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal (after birth) care. The MGP can consult as required with a senior hospital obstetrician during your pregnancy.
Your labour and birth will occur at your local birthing hospital. A main feature of the program is planned early discharge to your home for well mothers and babies. These details will be discussed with you at an early stage in your pregnancy. Your midwife will continue to visit you and your baby at home for your postnatal (after birth) care.
After your baby is born, midwives can visit you in your home to provide care and support.
If you engage the care of a private obstetrician, you will be booked into hospital services in the midwives clinic.
GPs who are trained in obstetrics or specialist doctors (obstetricians) may provide shared maternity care for women during pregnancy. Women who have a normal pregnancy and women with health concerns or pregnancy risks can access this care.
This choice is available for all women. Your doctor and midwife will guide you and arrange appointments as needed. You will choose the hospital for labour and birth with your health team.
