Safe havens in the community
Walumarra Dungal – Protect; to be a guardian, support
A Safe Haven café-style venue is open at both Dubbo and Parkes to provide a safe, welcoming place for people to visit or seek refuge and support if they are experiencing anxiety, emotional distress or thoughts of suicide. On arrival, people can access quiet rooms and spaces, non-clinical staff to speak to, sensory equipment like massage chairs to relax, games, puzzles and other engaging activities, or order a cup of coffee or tea to have in a relaxing atmosphere. If you are wanting advice for a person you are concerned about, the Safe Haven is also available to you.
The Safe Havens are staffed by peer workers with lived experience, who can provide support in an empathetic way and help identify further services for appropriate support, both immediate and ongoing. The Safe Havens were designed in consultation with people who have lived experience and provide a free, confidential service for anyone in need of support. No appointments or referrals are necessary. If you are travelling from outside of town you may wish to call ahead to confirm the Safe Haven is open.
