Non-school/service based teachers
Accreditation is voluntary for non-school/service based teachers.
A non-school/service based teacher can choose to apply for and maintain Proficient Teacher accreditation if they:
- hold a NESA-recognised degree or teaching qualification
- are currently not teaching in a school or service but have previously taught in one.
Their current employment duties must meet the following criteria:
- developing or implementing the NSW curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework for early childhood, primary and secondary education (including assessment and reporting)
- relating to the learning and well-being of school students or children in early childhood centres
- relating to NSW curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework teaching and learning in schools or early childhood centres
- lecturing or tutoring in a university or other higher education institution in NSW in Early Childhood to Year 12 education
- working as an educational consultant for schools or early childhood services.

Other options for non-school/service based teachers
If you are voluntarily accredited but do not wish to maintain your accreditation you can:
- apply for a Leave of Absence for a period of 6 months to 5 years, or
- cancel your accreditation.
If you are voluntarily accredited at Proficient Teacher you may also choose to change to non-practising accreditation.
