Public spaces are indoors too
Whatever the weather, there’s a public space near you. Your local public spaces aren’t only outside. You’ll find plenty of indoor places to experience.
Public spaces include public libraries, museums, galleries, community centres, showgrounds and indoor sports facilities.
These places breathe life into communities, enable people to connect with culture, share stories or learn new skills. We think of them as community living rooms and the places that contribute to community identity and cohesion.
Did you know there are around 360 public libraries in NSW?
Libraries are for more than borrowing books. They’re places where kids can enjoy story time, students can seek quiet locations and computers for study and reading, and the whole community can take part in community events and educational opportunities.
Museums and galleries offer a glimpse of local life, celebrating local history, stories and artists.
"We have many cultural spaces and assets, including galleries, museums and other cultural attractions and experiences… Arts, culture and heritage bring our community together and shape our shared identity."

Visit your local community centre for free or low-cost events and services in friendly and welcoming spaces. Come along to meet others in your area, learn a new skill, enjoy some exercise or find a group to play cards or board games with all year round.
If you’re lucky enough to have a showground near you, check out their events. Markets or exhibitions are a great way to while away a few hours, and you can check out local producers and artisans at the same time.
Indoor sports can also be great fun - grab a ball and head indoors to shoot some hoops or kick some goals. A heated indoor pool might be the place for exercise and recreation.
Use our digital map to find indoor public spaces near you – it’s full of inspiration to help you get out and about all year.
