About this walk
The river has connected communities for thousands of years. Walk along beside the waters of the Burramattagal (Parramatta River) and take in views of the Mangroves, forest and parklands.
Along the way immerse yourself in the stories of the river, First Nations culture, Colonial and Naval Heritage.

Highlights along the walk
Walks stop A: Olympic Park Wharf Viewing area
Journey by water, ferry from Circular Quay or Rydalmere. The banks of the Parramatta River were once lined with mangroves, supporting abundant fish and birdlife.
Walk stop B - Tidal Weir and Wetlands
Behind the tidal weir are protected wetlands that include pockets of mangroves, tidal mudflats & saltmarsh.
Walk stop C - The 190 series building - The Proof Yard
Situated on the banks of the Parramatta River are a group of buildings from Military use of the area (1897-1999).
Walk stop D - Wharf Pond
Tucked behind the brush fence is the delightful Wharf Pond, a freshwater haven for a variety of wildlife.
Walk stop E – Murama Healing Space & Wangal Walk
Murama is a community space for healing. The Wangal are the first Custodians of the air, land and waters now known as Sydney Olympic Park.
Walk stop F- Blaxland Riverside Park
A 3-hectare play space offering a wide range of activities for all ages. Enjoy views of the riverside and heritage buildings.
Walk stop G - Newington Armory - Gate House entry
A significant military establishment used for the transfer, storage, inspection and repair of ammunition and explosives from 1897 until 1999.
Walk stop H - The Gunpowder Magazine – Building 20
Constructed in 1897, this is one of the most significant buildings at Newington Armory.
Walk stop I - Birdlife Australia Discovery Centre
Swing by the BirdLife Discovery Centre to learn more about birds. Open Sundays.
Walk stop J - Narawang Wetland
Explore the gravel pathways through the wetland and listen for the small birds calling from the shelter of the reeds.
Walk stop K - Sydney Turpentine - Ironbark Forest
These trees in the forest have stood tall like sentinels watching over the landscape for hundreds of years.
Walk stop L - Woo-la-ra & the Silverwater Marker
Woo-la-ra - of aboriginal origin, meaning ‘look-out place’. Take in the views.
