New England Region and its Aboriginal Communities
The Armidale and Region Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place welcomes you to celebrate and learn about Aboriginal culture. Its community-focused program covers exhibitions, workshops, events, educational programs, and conference and meeting facilities.
Exhibition spaces feature artefacts and photography, and bi-monthly art exhibitions include paintings for sale. Experience the bush tucker walk, the yarning circle, take a tour and learn about the stories and rich cultural history behind each of the displays and paintings on offer. You can also delve into the book and electronic family history collection.
The centre promotes Aboriginal culture through programs and celebrations and works with other local organisations to display and highlight important Aboriginal art artefacts and crafts. The centre has a number of artefact collections, including coveted artefacts from the Tingha Green Valley Collection on loan from the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council.
The collections include items of ceremonial or secret/sacred nature, carved and scarred trees, and stone tools and implements. Many of the stone tools and implements are believed to be some of the largest and most significant collections in NSW.
The centre promotes creativity within the Aboriginal community and creates artistic opportunities for Aboriginal people. It has worked with over 100 Aboriginal artists from the New England region, throughout NSW and nationally.
