Setting up a home learning environment
The nature of home learning environments differ across home schooling families. Registration requires a home learning environment suitable for effective home schooling.
Different families will set up and use their homes differently. Some may use a dedicated office in the home, a desk or the dining room table.
When creating and maintaining a suitable home learning environment, parents should consider:
- a consistent location for written and/or online work
- suitable storage options for current and completed work
- access to a range of materials and resources
- access to a clear and uncluttered work space when focused learning is needed
- a safe learning environment with access to natural light and ventilation.
The Authorised Person will need to assess the suitability of the home learning environment for effective home schooling. An environment which is suitable for home learning must be maintained throughout the period of home schooling registration.
The NSW Department of Education website provides helpful tips for setting up a learning environment. While this information is designed for parents of children attending schools, home schooling parents may also find it a useful starting point.
