The Gunnery

This is one of the Create NSW properties provided to support the arts and cultural sector in NSW.  This property is leased by Artspace, one of Australia's leading interdisciplinary spaces for the production and presentation of contemporary art.

Location and history

The Gunnery is located at 43-51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, NSW 2011.

It is close to the Sydney CBD, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the Art Gallery of NSW.

This State-Heritage-listed building was originally constructed in 1910 as a naval gunnery instruction centre. It later served as a squat for artists and activists in the 1980s, before being renovated and reopened as an arts centre in 1992. 

The building was fully refurbished in 2023.

Exhibitions, events and workshops are hosted by Artspace throughout the year.
