Location and history
Garry Owen House is located in the Callan Park complex on Balmain Road in Rozelle.
It's about 5 km from the Sydney CBD. The house was built in 1840 as the residence of John Ryan Brenan, a magistrate and police magistrate. The estate covered 104 acres of land and included a farm, vineyard and dairy.
The house was acquired by the NSW Government in 1877 as part of the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane. In 1994, the hospital was closed and the site was transferred to the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.
Create NSW later took over management of the property. The house is tenanted by Writing NSW,
Highlights and amenities
The house is tenanted by Writing NSW, a not-for-profit organisation that provides literary resources and professional information to established and aspiring writers. It runs events, workshops and more.
The facilities at Gary Owen House include a number of spaces for literary activities and events, workshops, meetings, seminars and functions. Some features include:
- Garry Owen Room - a large function room that can accommodate up to 100 people.
- Henry Lawson Room - a medium-sized meeting room that can accommodate up to 30 people.
- Judith Wright Room - small meeting room that can accommodate up to 15 people.
