Returning to school
Following a serious injury, going back to school can often aid recovery, even if for limited times each day. See how assistance programs can help.
Talk to the school
To make it as easy as possible for your child to return to school and attend class during their recovery, you can talk to teachers about:
- developing a back-to-school awareness and support plan
- making any modifications and adjustments to ensure safe access.
Depending on the type of injury and how permanent it is, you may also be eligible for support programs to help with your child's studies offered by:
- the Education Standards Authority with adjustments to teaching, learning and assessment activities
- TAFE NSW with classroom assistance and, if you qualify, reduced or no course fees.
If the injury resulted from a motor accident
In this situation, you may be eligible for financial support through Lifetime Care. This is part of icare, the NSW Government's insurance and workers compensation scheme.
icare partners with families and education providers to support students return to their studies following a serious injury. Depending on the injury sustained, some of the services offered include:
- a school learning support officer or teacher’s aide to provide support in the classroom if required
- teacher release time so they can modify programs to meet student's learning needs and attend training
- specialist support such as therapists, special education consultants or other professionals
- tutoring required as part of a student's learning plan.
