Well I grew up in the country actually on a farm and so we love being in the country and uh being able to have a really nice space to live in, um room for the children to to grow up and run around outside.

It's easy to get to places, national parks or towns around the area, do activities, easy to get to sport um.

Which are very accessible, very accessible.

 

Tamworth's probably well known for its country music and maybe not a lot of people know much more than that, um but Tamworth's got a lot to offer people thinking of moving here, um the town it's a large busy working Town that's growing and it's a center for a lot of industry, a lot of opportunities uh to to do activities um, as well as not being far from Sydney, less than an hour by flight from Sydney, less than 4 hours by car from Newcastle uh and not that far from Brisbane so, it's not um inaccessible from those major centers either.

We've got a lovely new hospital which has been lovely, um that we've just moved into this year. One of the things I think that's different about when we were here before was, there's a lot more junior staff now. So, um I'm a paediatrician and uh we now have 24-hour registrar cover um, which has made a big difference to lifestyle, um in terms of when you're on call and uh and the support that you have on site, so that's that's great.

My name's Robin Diebold, I'm the orthopaedic surgeon at Armidale Hospital.
 

There's a number of things about Armidale, Armidale is a unique country town. It's, I'm really a city boy and Armidale, is a bit, I think of it as a slice of the city in the country. It has a lot of the advantages of the city and a lot of people think in a city, in a city fashion, but it also has the advantages of the country town. It's just, it's a great place to raise your family.

The traffic and the crowds was something I always disliked intensely, the rural lifestyle is is much more pleasant in terms of travel. Probably the main thing though is. is the people the people that are generally friendlier in the country.

I think if you haven't lived in the country and you're thinking about it, it's it's a great idea to try it, it's likely you'll love it. I was a city boy and I realised only after moving how little I knew about what the country was like. 

In the country although there's more space, people interact more socially it's more fun.

 

I still get in touch with my friends who are in Sydney and they spend their whole life pretty much getting to work, working all day, getting home late. 

We have, we have a good supply of specialists for our town, for the size of it. We generally, most of the major specialties such as medicine and surgery we have 4 or 4 or 5 consultants so they have a good roster and they cover each other well, it also means if we want consultations for our patients who are in other specialties it's not hard to get. 

 

We also have a small enough community that you get to know the other doctors at a personal level. It's nice in a personal sense, it's also nice in a professional sense because when you know each other, you can discuss patients and get things done in a much more efficient way.

Meet Kelvin

My name is Kelvin Kong. I am an ear, nose, and throat surgeon currently working at John Hunter Hospital. I'm from Worrimah Mob, which is just north of here, just north of the Awabakal land. And it's a privilege to be back on pseudo-home territory to be able to help the community.

I studied medicine in Sydney, and I did my surgical training in both Sydney and Melbourne. And I was always going to come back here, ahh firstly because my grandmother would probably punch me if I didn't, and secondly, because it's a beautiful area to live and certainly in one that I want to make sure that I keep connected to and my wider community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous who I have a lot of affection for and I thinks it’s a real privilege to be able to give back to the community, given that the community made me what I am today.

Hunter New England Health is a wonderful place to work. I've been very lucky to be afforded a job here, and I think it's an area where the work environment is very culturally supportive and safe for me. Obviously in the realm of surgery, it can be very isolating for an Aboriginal person, and I'm very fortunate that my colleagues as well as my friends have been extremely supportive.

More importantly, I think I feel an obligation to be able to help and serve the community that I live in. And I'm lucky enough in my work I have, not only to serve Hunter New England but also the wider area which is very fortunate, very lucky and very privileged to do so.
