Alcohol-related crime
Over 50 per cent of assaults recorded by police in 2008 in the Sydney CBD happened within 50 meters of a liquor outlet.
The NSW State Government has already introduced strategies to address alcohol-related violence across the State, with the introduction of new licence conditions on premises that were determined as the most violent according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. This was then refined to a two-tier system of rated premises.
The new licence conditions included:
- no glass vessels after midnight
- a mandatory 2 am lockout
- a requirement to cease serving alcohol 30 minutes before closing
- bans on shots and drink limits after midnight and
- ten-minute liquor sales time out or active distribution of food and/or water every hour.
The Department of Communities and Justice is continuing to work with other Government agencies and the community to address alcohol-related assaults.
