About NAPLAN
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Learn how NAPLAN is managed and what NESA's role is.
About NAPLAN
Every year the literacy and numeracy skills of students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 in Australia are assessed. The skills are assessed through NAPLAN.
All students in these years who are enrolled at a school are expected to participate.
NAPLAN is sat online in all NSW schools.
NAPLAN tests provide information on student progress in literacy and numeracy. The tests complement the range of formal and informal assessments already conducted in schools.
The areas assessed during NAPLAN are:
- writing
- reading
- conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- numeracy.
Managing NAPLAN
The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for developing and reporting on NAPLAN throughout Australia.
Test Administration Authorities (TAA) support schools to deliver NAPLAN in each Australian state and territory.
In NSW, the TAA is NESA.
ACARA provides NAPLAN information on its main ACARA website and its National Assessment Program (NAP) website.
For detailed information on NAPLAN reporting visit the ACARA website.
Visit the NAP website for:
- NAPLAN protocols
- information on what is in the tests
- access to the public demonstration site.
