This data reports on the number of students who were awarded a HSC in 2023. View the gender, location and socio-economic status of students awarded a HSC.
About the statistics
To qualify for the HSC students must satisfactorily complete a:
- Year 11 pattern of study – comprising of at least 12 units.
- Year 12 pattern of study – comprising at least 10 units.
Students must also meet the HSC minimum standard in literacy and numeracy before they can receive their HSC.

In 2023, HSC was awarded to:
- 34,769 female students
- 32,450 male students
- 41 non-binary students.

Use the graph below to view the number of students awarded the HSC by school location. The location is based on Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Remoteness Area classification.

In 2023, there were:
- 54,962 students attending schools in major cities
- 10,347 students attending schools in inner regional areas
- 1,800 students attending schools in outer regional and remote areas
- 151 students attending schools located overseas.
Socio-economic status (SES)
Use the graph below to view the number of students awarded the HSC by SES. The SES is based on the student’s address.
- Quartile 1 – represents the lowest or most disadvantaged 25% of SES localities.
- Quartile 4 – represents the highest or most advantaged 25%.
