Intertrade site remediation
Remediating land at the former BHP Newcastle Steelworks site.
Our Environmental Management Group is completing the remediation of land at the Intertrade site, part of the former BHP Newcastle Steelworks site in Mayfield.
We will:
- create an interim sewer and pump station connection
- demolish the wastewater treatment plant and substation
- supply high-voltage power
- remediate the site.
Background
BHP’s Newcastle Steelworks previously occupied the 52 ha of land next to Newcastle Harbour in Mayfield before transferring it to the NSW Government in 2001.
The Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation previously remediated a large part of the former steelworks site. This was in keeping with a voluntary management plan regulated by the NSW Environment Protection Authority under the Contaminated Land Act 1997.
We now own and manage the land.
To allow us to finish remediating the site, we will demolish the existing wastewater treatment plant.
We have installed the temporary wastewater pump station, which is connected to the Hunter Water Corporation sewer network. This work will ensure continued service to commercial properties operating within the Mayfield industrial estate.
Project stages
To complete remediation, we will:
- make a trade waste agreement with Hunter Water Corporation in 2024
- complete the Hunter Water Corporation sewer connection in 2024
- demolish the water treatment plant in 2025
- install high-voltage electricity in 2025.
