Bare Creek Bike Park
Completed: Construction of a world-class mountain bike park after remediating the former Belrose landfill site.
Landfill site transformed into world-class, 6 ha bike park
Bare Creek Bike Park was opened to the community in 2020 after our Waste Assets Management Corporation remediated the former Belrose landfill site and transformed it into a world-class, 6 ha bike park.
The Waste Assets Management Corporation managed the design and construction of a mountain bike facility to cater for all levels of riders.
Northern Beaches Council now manages the state-of-the-art park, which features:
- 1.6 km of downhill bike trails
- flow trails
- skills and dirt jump areas
- a pump track
- bike maintenance stations
- dedicated walking tracks.
The park is open to the community 7 days a week and is highly acclaimed by the international mountain biking community. This project is a truly remarkable transformation from tip to community treasure.
Benefits
Key benefits from the project include delivering:
- a world-class mountain biking facility on the Northern Beaches
- a safe green public space to use where there was once a landfill site
- a facility that caters for all levels of mountain bike riders, giving riders a safe place to learn
- a strengthening of relationships between the state government, local government and local communities.
Background
Landfill operations ended at the former Belrose Waste Management Centre in November 2014. The Waste Assets Management Corporation currently oversees the management and maintenance of the closed site.
During landfill operations, the NSW Government set up an Enhancement Fund. For every tonne of waste, $2 was set aside for the future development of the site. The fund raised $3.5 million.
As there is a large mountain biking community in the area, a mountain bike facility became the preferred future use for the site. Money from the Enhancement Fund was used to establish the park.
In November 2017, the Waste Assets Management Corporation began discussions with the Northern Beaches Council about building and managing a mountain bike facility on the site.
The Waste Assets Management Corporation began earthworks and concept track design with local mountain bike community group, Trail Care, and completed Bare Creek Bike Park in December 2020.
When the park was completed, the Waste Assets Management Corporation handed the facility over to the Northern Beaches Council for ongoing management and maintenance.
