Net zero strategy
Eliminating and offsetting carbon emissions across the Property and Development NSW-owned office portfolio by 2030.
We manage the state’s significant property portfolio and work closely with our government agency tenants to deliver quality, efficient and sustainable workplaces.
The NSW Government Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020–2030 aims to reduce emissions by 50% below 2005 levels by 2030.
We are committed to eliminating and offsetting operational carbon emissions at government-owned sites by 2030 through building sustainability programs and practices. Our Environmental Management Group leads this work.
We have determined the 2019 financial year baseline carbon emissions of our portfolio. The Net Zero Strategic Action Plan (PDF 2.1MB) describes how these emissions will be cut by at least 75% by 2030.
The plan includes:
- rolling out more rooftop solar panel systems
- rolling out smart building technologies, including upgrades to building management systems and developing and applying Internet of Things technologies
- upgrading LED lighting and lighting controls
- electrifying our buildings, removing the need for gas
- installing batteries that store renewable energy to use at times when the power grid is low on renewables.
Next steps
To deliver a net zero portfolio by 2030, we are developing plans to install more solar systems and smart batteries in our government-owned buildings. We will also improve lighting control systems to make the most of building occupancy and lighting level needs.
We will continue to regularly review the energy, water and waste performance of our buildings to ensure they are efficient. We will quickly identify any areas where our buildings could improve their performance and fix these.
We will continue to collaborate with other government agencies to develop and carry out our plans efficiently and effectively without duplicating effort.
