New future for the former Ivanhoe 'Warakirri' Correctional Centre

Property and Development NSW (PDNSW) has secured a new future for the former Ivanhoe ‘Warakirri’ Correctional Centre that will deliver social and economic outcomes for the community.

Following community consultation and a select tender process, PDNSW sold the site to Tronox Mining in May 2022. Tronox Mining will use the site for accommodation for its workers at the nearby Atlas Campaspe mine.

This will generate job opportunities in catering, cleaning, laundry, maintenance and administration and create much-needed economic stimulus for the town.

The Ivanhoe ‘Warakirri’ Correctional Centre divestment is just one example of how PDNSW is working with local government, communities, Local Aboriginal Land Councils, and the private sector to repurpose the state’s retired prisons to deliver positive outcomes for regional communities.

Background

Corrective Services NSW engaged PDNSW to investigate the potential opportunities for the conversion and adaptive reuse of the Ivanhoe ‘Warakirri’ Correction Centre which closed in 2020.

In December 2019, a ‘call for future uses’ was undertaken which confirmed any reuse of the site needed to provide social and economic benefits to the local community and be financially sustainable.

In February 2021, the Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections announced that negotiations were in progress with Tronox Mining to use the site as a base for up to 50 workers employed at the nearby Atlas Campaspe mineral sand mine.
