Our cancer services
Nepean Blue Mountains LHD sees a large volume of patients from across NSW. Our modern facilities have the people and technology to provide a wide range of high-quality diagnosis and treatment services.
Nepean Hospital has a dedicated cancer care inpatient ward, and our wide range of outpatient services are based in the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre at Nepean Hospital.
The chemotherapy service is also available at Lithgow Hospital and the Hawkesbury Living Cancer Trust Chemotherapy Unit in Windsor at Hawkesbury District Hospital.
Our specialists include medical and radiation oncologists (cancer specialists) and haematologists (specialising in cancer and non-cancer blood disorders ). They work with a range of other health professionals to provide evidence-based treatment and integrated care to meet the physical and mental needs of patients throughout their treatment.
Cancer may require treatment with medications or radiotherapy, sometimes alongside other treatments such as surgery. Find out more about nuclear medicine.
We also offer a range of supportive services that include psycho-oncology and allied health staff to give our patients the extra support they may need.
Our service also includes a Palliative and Supportive Care team that provides inpatient and outpatient care across Nepean Blue Mountains.

Medical treatments
Medical oncology is the treatment and management of cancer that may include a combination of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy.
Radiation oncology is the treatment and management of cancer using radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours.
Haematology involves the diagnosis, management and treatment of blood disorders - both cancerous and non-cancerous.
At the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre a specialised team will oversee your care and coordinate your treatments.
Our clinicians work closely with surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, specialised cancer nurses and others as needed to provide the best possible care for each person.
The team will plan your treatment in consultation with you, taking into account a variety of factors including the diagnosis, where it is in your body, the stage of your cancer, your general health and fitness, and your individual needs. It may include a combination of treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy.
We understand that a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be challenging for you and your family. Our staff are available to provide information and support to help you cope with your treatment and any potential side effects.
At your first appointment, you will meet with the treating doctor and discuss your diagnosis and the management of your cancer. The doctor will assess your symptoms, examine you, and review any recent blood tests, X-rays and biopsy results. It is useful to bring a list of any test results that were done elsewhere, and a list of your current medications.
Allied health for cancer patients
Our specialist team includes physiotherapists, lymphoedema specialists, occupational therapists, dietitians and speech therapists.
These services are available to patients with a cancer diagnosis within the last 5 years or continued active treatment. Other patients may be able to access our regular Allied health services.
Most services are available through outpatient clinics, but home visits may be possible in some cases.
A referral is needed.
