Volunteer opportunities
Are you looking for a way to give back to the community? Would you like to help others during a difficult time? Are you friendly, reliable and have a genuine desire to make a difference? Then why not volunteer at Nepean Blue Mountains LHD? When you volunteer with us, you will be helping people who really need you.
Our volunteers are involved with a range of duties including:
- working in one of our hospital gift shops
- fundraising initiatives
- working on guide desks, helping patients and visitors find their destination
Volunteers help contribute to our CORE values of providing a compassionate and caring experience for patients, carers and visitors.
Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum period of 6 months and be available to attend a regular 4 hour shift. We will work with you to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle.
Volunteering at our facilities
Volunteer roles available at the hospital include:
- Hospital guide - Greet our patients and visitors at the entrances of the hospital and assist them to find their way around
- Gift shop assistant - Assist customers with their purchases (Funds raised within the Gift Shop are donated to Nepean Hospital for the purchase of patient equipment)
- Ward assistant - Support the wards with duties such as making up armbands, restocking supplies, playing bingo and doing craft with aged care patients
- Archive assistant - Serve as the hospital’s corporate memory by preserving the hospital’s cultural heritage and unique identity
- Fundraising assistant - Assist with raffles, trash and treasure events, BBQs and other fundraising activities for the hospital
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and have a flu shot every year.

Volunteer applicants must:
- complete a volunteer application form (available on this page below)
- have a cleared a National Criminal Record Check (this check is undertaken by the hospital before a volunteer commences - there is no charge to the volunteer to have this check completed)
- have a cleared Working with Children Check (there is no charge to volunteers to have this check completed)
- be able to commit to volunteering at least one four hour shift each week
- be able to commit to volunteering for at least 12 months
It is a requirement that you are and remain fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please note proof of vaccination (via the MyGov Medicare Vaccination Certificate or a Medical Certificate) will be required.

Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and have a flu shot every year.
Applicants must also clear an aged care check.

Volunteer opportunities are available through the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre and Palliative care or end of life care to support patients with cancer in Nepean Hospital.
Volunteers greet patients and carers, help with patient care and provide guidance about our services.
Training and ongoing support is provided for all centre volunteers.

You must be at least 18 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and have a flu shot every year.
Our volunteers must understand the importance of confidentiality. We look for volunteers who are kind, compassionate and want to make a difference for our patients, their families, and carers.

External volunteers
Nepean Blue Mountains LHD welcomes the support of the Cancer Council as a partner organisation. Cancer Council volunteers provide general support to our patients and visitors.
Volunteer opportunities are available both on site at our facilities and off site, providing Palliative care to patients at their home. Care is provided to patients in the Penrith and Hawkesbury areas.
We also offer opportunities for biography volunteers, who support someone with a life limiting illness to review their life, and work together on documenting their life story.
Through our Volunteer Service, volunteers receive comprehensive training and on-going assistance.

You must be at least 18 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and have a flu shot every year.

External volunteers
Our patients in the Blue Mountains and Lithgow are supported by our partner organisation Belong Blue Mountains. Care is provided at home or one of our facilities.

Volunteers are required to complete a Working With Children Check, available free to volunteers.
On the job training is also provided to successful applicants.
