Challenge
It is crucial first responders, such as paramedics and police, are able to access uninterrupted radio communications within infrastructure. This includes areas such as the ambulance bay, emergency ward, reception, and fire panel areas.
Lack of reliable communications can be life threatening during emergencies. First responders require consistent coverage when moving between indoor and outdoor areas, especially when critical information about a patient or location needs to be communicated.
Solution
The integration of an IBC system in the Tweed Valley Hospital addresses this challenge by extending the external PSN signal into key areas of the hospital used by first responders. This ensures uninterrupted emergency radio communications, enabling them to provide a reliable continuity of care for patients when moving between indoor and outdoor areas of the hospital.
IBC solutions ensure PSN coverage is sufficient in areas frequently accessed by first responders such as hospitals, but also road tunnels, shopping centres, recreational arenas, airports and train stations.
Expected outcome
The IBC integration at Tweed Valley Hospital significantly enhances the expansion and reliability of the PSN, ensuring emergency and essential services remain connected, therefore improving safety for the communities of Northern NSW.

The Tweed Valley Hospital IBC was funded and delivered by NSW Health in collaboration with NSW Health Infrastructure and NSW Telco Authority. It is a timely example of the NSW Government’s Digital Connectivity Principles. The principles provide guidance for NSW Government infrastructure projects over $10 million to be built with digital connectivity infrastructure at the outset. In turn this supports the connectivity needs of the community, government agencies and emergency services of NSW.
