Australia‘s 3G networks will be switched over and all phones and devices that rely on 3G, and some older 4G devices, such as EFTPOS machines, medical alarms, personal emergency response devices, smart watches and tablets, may no longer work; with some customers unable to make or receive calls or texts or call Triple Zero (000).
All mobile users with 3G-only handsets will need to upgrade to at least a 4G device to continue to receive a mobile service. All smartphones released over recent years are able to access 4G networks and many also have 5G connectivity.
Australia's Mobile Network Operators are phasing out 3G networks by the end of 2024, as part of a broader industry shift towards more advanced 4G and 5G technologies.
Individuals, businesses and communities who are currently reliant on 3G devices are encouraged to check if their devices are compatible with newer networks by contacting their mobile service provider or visiting the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) website, text ‘3’ to ‘3498’ or contact your mobile service provider (below) before the switchover on Monday, 28 October 2024.
