In a joint statement issued by Telstra and Optus on 15 August 2024, the extension will allow customers more time to prepare for the 3G closure, which is part of a broader industry shift towards more advanced 4G and 5G technologies.
Individuals and businesses are encouraged to check if the devices they are using are compatible with 4G and 5G networks, including for emergency calling, and upgrade them prior to the 3G closure.
Mobile service providers may contact affected customers, however customers are also encouraged to check for themselves by texting ‘3’ to 3498 for instant advice on whether a mobile phone could be affected.
It is very important individuals and businesses do not call Triple Zero to test their device.
TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network, however TPG Telecom/Vodafone customers should not assume that their device is unaffected, as some affected devices may be relying on Telstra and Optus’ 3G networks for Triple Zero.
Customers are encouraged to check if their devices are compatible with newer networks and contact their mobile service providers with any queries or concerns.
