National Fair Work system of workplace relations
The national workplace relations system is a collection of legislation that applies to most employees and employers in Australia. It includes the Fair Work Act 2009, the National Employment Standards, registered agreements and awards.
In NSW, most private sector workers are covered by the National Fair Work system.
NSW also has its own regulations for long service leave and other employment conditions, and for State and local government employees. See NSW Industrial Relations.
The Australian Government provides information on the national system:
Fair Work legislation
The Fair Work Act 2009 (Fair Work Act) and the Fair Work Regulations 2009 are the main legislation that govern the employee and employer relationships in Australia.
National Employee Standards
The National Employment Standards (NES) are the minimum employment entitlements that have to be provided to all employees.
Modern awards
Awards (modern awards) are legal documents that outline the minimum pay rates and conditions of employment. There are more than 100 industry or occupation awards that cover most people who work in Australia.
Who Australia's national workplace relations system covers
Most, but not all employers and employees in Australia are part of the national system.
