Safety in and around schools
Whether you drive, cycle, or walk, you can teach and model good road safety to your children.
Be a road safety role model
Parents and carers have an opportunity to act as role models to show children what it means to be a responsible pedestrian, passenger, cyclist or driver.
Children new to school need to become familiar with:
- what a school zone means
- drop-off and pick-up locations
- rules applying to pedestrian and school crossings.
Online learning activities
The Safety Town website from Transport NSW has a range of learning activities that parents and carers can use to support better road safety awareness for their children.
The website includes multiple ebooks divided into age groups that cover a range of topics, including:
- pedestrian practices
- child car and booster seat guidelines
- helmet safety for bicycle riders.
Fact sheets
Road Safety NSW has provided a fact sheet in 12 languages detailing how to keep kids safe around schools. It covers advice detailing:
- dropping off and picking up safety tips
- walking together to and from school
- child safety in cars
- school zone speed limits and safety crossings.
