We are proud to employ nurses and midwives in a wide range of roles across all of our diverse services and facilities, in frontline roles caring for patients as well as management and research roles.
Career opportunities
With over 3,100 full-time, part-time, and casual nurses and midwives, Nepean Blue Mountains LHD is the largest employer in the area.
Our 5 hospitals and 9 community health centres offer supportive and enriching places for nurses and midwives to begin or continue their careers and gain a valuable breadth of experience.
We support career opportunities for all nursing and midwifery positions through a range of professional and specialty career pathways. These include novice to senior specialisation and professional pathways, such as clinical nurse/midwife specialists, clinical nurse/midwife consultants and nurse/midwife practitioners.
Our strong partnerships with education providers support career progression and mean we are at the forefront of research, training and education.
Our 2 year supportive Transition to Professional Practice Programs include graduates from the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery and the Diploma of Nursing course.

GradStart program
In a dynamic environment of learning and development, our graduates can consolidate clinical skills and knowledge, and acquire ward management skills while working in a tertiary or rural setting.
At Nepean Blue Mountains, our Nursing and Midwifery programs include a minimum of 3 clinical rotations, that are supported by structured education and training.

Transition to specialty practice
After registered and enrolled nurses have completed their first 12 months of practice they continue on to a 12 month contract in a Transition to Speciality Practice area.
The program includes structured rotations aligned to an educational program so staff acquire the unique skills required for specialty areas including critical care (emergency and ICU), perioperative, community, mental health, drug and alcohol, surgical, medical aged care, paediatrics, neonatal and cancer care.

MidStart program
MidStart is an annual state-wide recruitment process for registered nurses to be employed as midwifery students while studying a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery.
At Nepean Blue Mountains LHD, MidStart offers registered nurses a student midwifery position at Lithgow or Nepean Hospitals while you study at one of the following universities:
- University of Technology Sydney
- Charles Sturt University (additional mid-year intake)
- Western Sydney University

Rural Postgraduate Midwifery Student Scholarship
This scholarship is available at Blue Mountains and Lithgow Hospitals.
The scholarship supports a registered nurse to undertake a postgraduate qualification in midwifery, leading to ongoing employment.
Expressions of interest are advertised each April.
