We have a total of 34 basic physician trainee (BPT) and 8 senior resident medical officer (SRMO) accredited positions for trainees who are considering physician training or considering a year only of medical terms. Of these, 35 trainee positions are at Nepean, 3 at Ryde, 2 at Bathurst and 2 at Tweed Heads hospitals.
Nepean has full accreditation with the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) as a Level 3 hospital and offers a broad range of medical specialties including an ICU term.

Our program is designed to maximise your breadth and depth of learning and experience, and help you prepare for exams. Trainees are allocated 1 study course each year, and this includes:
Lectures
Our lecture series runs all year, with a focus on clinical topics for the first half of the year and nultiple choice question exam preparation in the second half. Teaching is generally scheduled after 4pm.
Written exam preparation program
In addition to the lectures, trainees have 3 trial exams (100 questions each, in October, December and January) leading up to their written exam.
Clinical exam preparation program
In addition to the lectures, trainees attend:
- a boot camp at the end of March
- weekly public long cases with consultants
- weekly short cases as a group
- regular neurology short cases
- weekend Ryde sessions every fortnight
- Scorpio sessions
Four trainees are examined each week (1 long, 2 shorts each), and there is also a trial exam at Nepean and at Ryde.

About us
Our department consists of subspecialties of Cardiology, Respiratory, Neurology, Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases, and is the key service provider for patients between Penrith and Bathurst.
Blue Mountains Hospital has 32 medical inpatient beds, 11 single rooms swing ward (including one negative pressure room) and 4 close observation unit COU beds for critical care patients. There are onsite subspecialty clinics including respiratory, neurology, cardiology (echocardiogram service and developing new services such as CT coronary angiogram), oncology and renal clinics. A new dialysis unit opened onsite in 2019.
The department is staffed by 7 physicians, 1 General Medicine Advanced Trainee (GMAT), 3 Basic Physicians Trainees (BPT) and 3 Junior Medical Officers (PGY1-2) with full allied health professional support.

About us
Women and Children’s Services at Blue Mountains Hospital is a key paediatric service between Penrith and Bathurst and a referral centre for Lithgow.
We provide a Level 4 General Paediatric Service (excluding paediatric surgery, major trauma and diabetes service); Child and Adolescent Developmental Service; and Level 2+ Neonatal Service/Special Care Nursery. The hospital has 8 paediatric inpatient beds, 1 dedicated paediatric Emergency Department bed; 8 maternity beds, 2 birthing suites and 3 special care nursery beds.
Our role goes well beyond emergency, birthing, inpatient and outpatient services, to community health and close collaboration with key stakeholders in the community.
The Paediatric department is staffed by 7 visiting medical officers (VMOs), 1 paediatric trainee, paediatric clinical psychologist, speech therapist, dietitian, physiotherapist, Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist 2, as well as nurses and midwives.
This rotation has a strong foundation for building skills in outpatient paediatric assessments and management of children with complex medical, behavioural and developmental problems.
Our paediatric trainees work 5 days a week as a day shift and have the opportunity to be on call with a consultant.

- Trainees receive extraordinary experience in assessing and managing patients in our outpatient clinics with a focus in complex medical, developmental and behavioural paediatrics.
- Trainees are immersed in departmental life and are given various opportunities to take higher (clinical, administrative, quality assurance, teaching) responsibilities depending on their motivation and competence.
- Trainees play a significant role in providing teaching for students, Emergency Department staff, hospital JMOs, Nurses and Midwifes, preparing and moderating webinars; and take an active role in regular paediatric MOCs.
- One day a week spent at Nepean Hospital Paediatric unit. This includes half a day at the Developmental Unit participating in formal developmental assessments with a psychologist and developmental paediatrician. They also attend paediatric and NICU teaching sessions, CHW grand rounds (via video link), and the paediatric journal club.
- Weekly 1:1 teaching from paediatric VMOs.
- Trainees play a central role in running the monthly Morbidity and Mortality meetings at Blue Mountains Hospital and presenting at the quarterly combined LHD meeting.
About us
We provide a key rehabilitation service between Penrith and Bathurst and a referral centre for patients requiring inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation.
This service won the Australian Rehabilitation Outcomes Centre award for Most Improved Outcomes in Stroke Patients in 2019.
We provide Level 3 inpatient rehabilitation services in our 18-bed rehabilitation ward and as needed to patients elsewhere in the hospital, as well as outpatient rehabilitation clinics.
Patients we care for include orthopaedics, neurological, amputee, geriatric (falls), brain and spinal cord injury, and surgical admissions.
Our multidisciplinary team includes 2 staff specialists (including the Head of Department), an accredited rehabilitation trainee, a resident medical officer as well as nursing staff and physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, speech pathologists, dieticians and a discharge planner.
Our outpatient services include rehabilitation clinics, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy programs.
Our trainees are closely supervised and supported by rehabilitation consultants. They have opportunities for teaching, research, multidisciplinary case conferences, family conferences and discharge planning. They benefit from multidisciplinary learning in various domains to help prepare for exams.
The rotation also has a strong foundation for building skills in outpatient rehabilitation assessment and management of functional decline and other rehabilitation in adult and geriatrics.
The rehabilitation trainee is rostered 5 days a week (Mondays to Fridays) on day shift, allowing time for formal teaching by the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and informal learning from colleagues.

Education and training opportunities
- Informal teaching during Ward Rounds (including CEX assessments for Residents) and long case assessment for Rehabilitation Trainee as part of Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) requirements.
- Trainees are relieved from the inpatient clinical duties for half a day each month to attend AFRM teaching at the RACP Office, Sydney.
- Weekly Registrar 1:1 topic teaching or case based teaching, and 1:1 teaching from Paediatric VMOs
- Bedside 1:1 teaching including examination and assessment of functional impairment
- Trainees are given a central role in presenting at the monthly Rehabilitation Morbidity and Mortality meetings
- Trainees are given the opportunity to complete quality assurance and research projects during the 6 month term.
- Trainees are supported and guided through their research project as a requirement of their training module.
- Trainees provide monthly teaching to the multidisciplinary team, supporting engagement and connectivity among the disciplines.
- Weekly Radiology Teaching.
- Attend lecture series on Tuesday 4-6 pm.
- Wednesday morning 7:30am to 8:30am network physicians lectures through video link.
- Wednesday afternoon 4-6pm. Supported by consultant staff to ensure attendance.
- Attend Nepean Hospital grand rounds via video link.
- Advanced Trainees are encouraged and supported in completing the compulsory research project.
- Thursday morning education – to present a case and to discuss pathophysiology and current recommendation for management of the case.
- Participate in X-ray education meetings on Fridays.
- Mortality and Morbidity meeting monthly.
- Consultant Physicians provide bedside teaching for Trainees and JMOs - targeted history taking and clinical sign and to help complete bed side procedures.
- Team supervisors discuss with BPT clinical learning needs and complete a mini CEX per week.
