Natural Capital Profiling Service Pilot

Local Land Services is offering land managers across NSW the opportunity to assess and profile their property's natural assets and explore opportunities in natural capital and environmental markets.

Project background

Local Land Services offers natural capital services to help farmers and land managers across NSW make informed decisions about managing their natural assets and how to integrate them with their farming systems. 

We aim to help you understand the value of nature on your property and help you make decisions about new market opportunities, while providing independent advice on these evolving topics. 

Project objectives

This pilot is trialling a new service to provide independent information and advice on the natural capital you manage, and natural capital market opportunities for your farm. 

Following participation in this pilot, you will be better able to:

  • identify your farm’s natural assets and the valuable services they provide
  • make informed decisions about natural capital market opportunities
  • determine the next steps to improve your farm’s sustainability, productivity and resilience. 

Who is this service for?

This service is aimed at farmers and land managers with some existing understanding of natural capital and environmental markets, who would benefit from more tailored natural capital services.  

As this service is a trial, Local Land Services is looking for farmers and land managers who are willing to contribute their feedback.

What is included in a natural capital profile?

Local Land Services will work with you, using spatial data, site visits and 1 on 1 discussions, to create a tailored natural capital profile of your farm. 

Your profile will be customised to your unique situation, building on your existing knowledge and goals. We will also connect you with relevant services where needed. 

Each personalised natural capital profile will include:

  • insights into the status of natural capital on your farm
  • guidance on actions that support your business and environmental goals
  • information on possible market opportunities for your farm
  • referrals to other resources and services that can support your next steps.

Introducing Local Land Services Natural Capital Profiles

Welcome to Warralong.
This is our property here at Coolac.
It's about 3,800 hectares.
We have a mixed farm where we do cropping and we've got sheep,
a few different types of sheep and a few different types of cattle.
Warralong, like many properties in the Riverina, has
a number of natural assets and we can see some of them here today.
We've got the soils that are producing these canola crops, we've got scattered
remnant vegetation, we've got rocky outcrops
and we've got that beautiful Serpentinite woodland.
In total area, we've got about 100 hectares
of specific plantings that we've put in, plus we've reserved
a whole heap of other areas, probably another 200 hectares.
We feel that's a really important part of our farm.
We like the biodiversity, we think it adds to the aesthetics of the farm.
It allows us to run our business better.
Riverina Local Land Services
is working with landholders to help them
to better understand the natural assets they have on their properties
and how they can manage them for their own productivity and sustainability,
and also how to get involved with environmental markets.
We wanted to protect this this block that we've been looking at today.
It's about 100 acres, so 40 hectares.
It's a special site.
I didn't realize how special it was when we first started talking about it,
but it just fell into what we care about, like we care about the land.
Riverina Local Land Services is working with landholders across our region
to develop a natural capital profile for their property.
Now these reports are tailored to the needs of that individual property.
It looks at the assets that are specifically found on that property
and helping the landholder make more informed decisions
on how they can be managed for their own productivity, sustainability
and also opportunities to diversify their income.
We wanted to do a profile because I wanted to learn
a lot more about the environment where our farm is.
We care a lot about it and we're constantly looking to improve it.
And so the opportunity to get a profile done
was something that we really wanted to embrace.
Learning about biodiversity was just so rewarding
and satisfying for, for me and my family personally,
understanding a lot more about our carbon footprint and what we can do about it,
and also learning just about the heritage sites that have been on the property.
It just sort of appeals to everything that we love about the land.
It's a very rewarding experience.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone who wants to get data
and get a plan about their business.

  • This pilot is open to farmers and land managers across NSW.
  • Some prior understanding of natural capital or environmental markets is required.
  • You must be prepared to provide feedback at several stages of the pilot to help us evaluate and improve the service.

What happens next?

The natural capital profiling service pilot will be delivered in partnership with you.

The process:

  1. Application:  Your local Natural Capital Advisor will contact you to let you know whether your application was successful.
  2. Information gathering: This includes a desktop review, phone consultation, and a site visit.
  3. Natural Capital profile report: LLS staff will send you a draft report for your feedback.
  4. Feedback and next steps: LLS staff will finalise the report and discuss the next steps, offering additional support where needed. 

There are limited spots available, so if your application is unsuccessful, Local Land Services will suggest other services that may be useful for you.
