Far West LHD cancer services
We have a range of oncology and cancer services based in Broken Hill Hospital, and outreach support to people in other Far West towns and communities.
We also promote screening to increase the early detection of various cancers.
A breast screen or screening mammogram is the most effective way to find breast cancer early.
BreastScreen targets women aged 50-74 to have a screening mammogram every two years.
BreastScreen regularly visits Broken Hill Hospital and travels to smaller communities in Far West.
Screening is free and no referral is needed.

Our Far West cancer care services team includes:
a cancer care coordinator who provides care coordination, clinical information, assistance with appointments, travel and accommodation, and general support to patients and families from the time of a new cancer diagnosis. Call (08) 8080 1197.
a psycho-oncology counsellor/ social worker who provides emotional, practical and counselling support for patients and families living with a cancer diagnosis. Call (08) 8080 1577 (Broken Hill) or (03) 5021 7220 (Dareton).
A doctor's referral is not required to access these services.
Broken Hill Hospital has a part-time nurse-led clinic for patients referred by a doctor for assessment for a colonoscopy. Increasing the early detection of bowel cancer helps increase survival rates.

A McGrath Breast Care Nurse is employed by and based in The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Broken Hill. They can advise, support and care for people with breast cancer and their families from the time of diagnosis. These services are available for free and without a referral.

The Oncology Unit in Broken Hill Hospital provides a range of services for patients diagnosed with cancer.
Accredited oncology nurses provide education and advice, and administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other treatments.
Specialist medical services are provided by specialists from Adelaide, in person and by virtual care.
The Medical Day Only Unit, part of the Oncology Unit, provides day-only infusions, blood transfusions and venesections for non-malignant conditions.
A referral from a doctor is required for all these services.
The Oncology Unit is open 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Broken Hill Hospital has a prostate cancer nurse specialist who coordinates care and provides education, advice and support for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Services are available at the point of diagnosis, through to treatment, management of side effects and survivorship.
