A newly unveiled public spaces charter outlines the NSW Government’s commitment to producing world class public spaces across the state that are accessible for all.
The NSW Public Spaces Charter was developed to align with the 2013 United Nations Charter of Public Space and formed a basis for the Global Public Space Toolkit.
Councils, industry, and community members are invited to be signatories of the charter, which comprises a set of standards for the creation and improvement of NSW’s public spaces.
Signatories will be supported with advice on how to implement the charter into their organisation or practice.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the COVID-19 pandemic emphasised a need for safe and welcoming public spaces, and the NSW Public Spaces Charter will set a design standard to ensure it is achieved.
“The charter provides ten principles for quality public space that have been designed to maximise the social, cultural, environmental and economic benefits that public space delivers,” Mr Stokes said.
“The benefits of becoming a signatory include access to NSW Government one-on-one support, a community of practice, promotional opportunities and data sharing.”
Sporting organisations in NSW can access a share of $650,000 to help increase participation, promote leadership and encourage inclusivity in women’s sport through the ‘Her Sport Her Way’ Grant Program.
NSW’s art and cultural institutions and independent artists will receive $1 million in financial support to stage next year’s inaugural Sydney WorldPride Festival.
