Patient journey
Each patient's journey through Justice Health NSW is unique and managed using a person-centred approach to meet their individual health needs. Due to the variation and complexity of each patient's health needs, as well as fluctuations in their health status, a range of services are provided to ensure continuity of care tailored to the individual. This approach effectively prepares patients to return to the community.
Healthcare within Justice Health NSW is delivered across three key domains: community, custody, and inpatient services.

Courts
Justice Health NSW collaborates with legal systems, as well as other key stakeholders, by providing support for their health needs and diverting people away from the criminal justice system. It is of immense benefit to people in custody and their families when we connect them to the appropriate services to reduce further criminal offences.
Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS) delivered by Justice Health NSW offers mental health support in Local Courts across NSW. This service conducts thorough evaluations and, when suitable, offers suggestions to magistrates for diverting individuals away from custody and into suitable treatment options.
The SCCLS is currently expanding to include 58 local courts in rural, regional and metro locations.
The Youth Drug and Alcohol Court focuses on minimising criminal activities associated with drug and/or alcohol use among young individuals. It combines judicial and therapeutic measures to effectively reduce and handle drug and/or alcohol use.
More information on the Drug Court, visit the Drug Court of NSW website.
Custody
Justice Health NSW manages health centres within publicly run adult correctional centres and youth justice centres. Justice Health NSW nurses are also stationed in a small number of police cells.

Community
Justice Health NSW expands its services into the community and connects people with appropriate health and support services with the goal of improving their outcomes and making a difference. Our team coordinates care for patients with complex health needs.
The Community Forensic Mental Health Service consists of a team of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, nurses, and Allied Health staff. This service operates using the consultation liaison model and works closely with the Adult Ambulatory Correctional Mental Health Service, Court Liaison Service, and other Local Health Districts.
The Connections Project aims to improve the ongoing healthcare for adult inmates who have a history of drug use and are returning to the community after being released.
The Adolescent Community and Court Team works with government agencies and Area Child Adolescent Community Mental Health Services to help young people avoid being placed in custody.
The Community Integration Team is a program that provides support before and after the release of adolescents who have recently been released from custody. The program offers a range of care services to these individuals, particularly those with an emerging or serious mental illness, as well as those with problematic drug and alcohol use or dependence.
The Adult Drug Court program helps people with drug dependency who have committed offences. Its main goals are to reduce drug dependency and prevent participants from resorting to crime to support their drug dependency. This program works with various stakeholders from the health and judicial sectors to support the successful rehabilitation of participants.
The Compulsory Drug Treatment program is a court-ordered and innovative program that focuses on abstinence. It aims to provide residential rehabilitation for male offenders with long-term addiction and a history of multiple offenses. The program operates in 3 stages: detention, semi-detention and supervision in a community setting.
